Open area calculator

Calculate the open area of your perforated sheet

Quickly determine the theoretical open area of a perforated sheet from its geometry: hole shape, dimensions and pitch.

A technical tool designed for design offices, designers, engineers, architects and production engineering departments.

This preliminary sizing tool also estimates the theoretical number of perforations and the weight per unit area of the sheet, based on the material and thickness.

Open area

Why calculate the open area?

The open area is a key parameter when choosing a perforated sheet. In particular, it affects:

  • air and fluid flow;
  • light transmission and diffusion;
  • filtration and separation performance;
  • the acoustic properties of certain configurations;
  • the weight per unit area of the sheet;
  • the rigidity and mechanical behaviour of the part;
  • the appearance and level of transparency of the perforation.

However, the choice of perforation must take into account the material, thickness, geometry, pitch, perforation direction and dimensions of the part all at once.

Reading the result

How to read the result

The open area percentage

The ratio between the open area and the total area. It determines airflow, transparency and weight saving.

The number of holes per dm²

It gives an idea of the perforation cost: the more holes, the more press strokes.

The theoretical weight

It is calculated from the remaining solid area. It does not take solid margins or rolling tolerances into account.

Limits

The limits of the calculation

The results provided by this calculator are theoretical. They allow you to compare perforation geometries and guide preliminary sizing, but they do not constitute manufacturing validation.

Feasibility depends in particular on the material, thickness, perforation/thickness ratio, pitch, size, perforation direction, margins and manufacturing constraints.

Every configuration is validated by our technical team before quotation.
